He simply has nothing left to lose or collect. How many men returned from Vietnam at least a slight disillusioned by the world they came home to? How many have had their lives mapped out clean and gorgeous, only to have the blind monkey wrench of fate turn their worlds upside down? Here is a man who is perfectly willing to sacrifice his freedom, his safety, and possibly even his life to collect what amounts to a ten-dollar bet, at best. I wonder if this movie could be made today – after all, it doesn’t have any computer-generated special effects, it demands the viewer’s complete attention, and really needs to be seen more than once to like fully the meaning of all of the scenes. Fantastic too is that the writer (Bruce Joel Rubin) was working on the filming of this and his more common movie “Ghost” at the same time. Director Adrian Lynne wisely avoided some of the more sacharrine touches that Rubin had in the modern script (such as the opinion of “Heaven”) and added many subtle disturbing elements of his contain. The final result is a film that you will contemplate about long after you ogle it, a man’s straggle through the bardo residence to his final enlightenment. In a intention, this is the cinematic equivalent of a Pettersson symphony – an emotional catharsis after the long, dim night of the soul. I’m not ashamed to say that I yell like a baby every time I glance it.

This one isn’t for casual viewing; it is *certainly* not a Saturday-night time killer, nor is it a “dread” movie in the standard sense of the term. Aloof, absolutley my highest recommendation.

This criminally underrated masterpiece of psychological dismay broadsided audiences who were expecting … well, near to deem of it, what were they expecting, exactly? Slowly a set emerges. We peep shots of him before the war, gay, with a wife and son, and then learn that he may have been frail as a subject for unorthodox drug experiments. He meets other vets who are similarly timorous, and a gentle chiropractor (Danny Aiello) who has some story words of advice about his past and future. And then we acquire a series of unsettling scenes that subvert everything we have seen and force us to read it in an unsettling current draw — which of course would be absolutely criminal to insist here.

Let’s face it — this isn’t a fun movie. It’s bleak, depressing, disturbing, and ends on the darkest possible impress. But it’s also made with absolutely consummate skill and complete assurance in the material. This wasn’t a hatchet job, but a sincere part of art, and it needs to be seen in that light.
